Google is now waist deep in the murky waters of politics. Having started “Google NetPAC” (Google Internet Political Action Party). Knowing Washington runs out of money Google will be putting cash towards politicians who are inline with their interests. A lot of companies of course do this already and Google desperately needs favour for Net Neutrality.
To balance things out Google has also hired two former Republican Senators to boost its support with the GOP, since most Googler donations tend to go to the opposite side of the fence. Google will be sponsoring its first political fundraiser this Wednesday (together with eBay and Technet), raising cash for, another Republican, New Mexico Representative Heather Wilson, a major supporter of network neutrality who Google needs re-elected if it expects to win next year. Unlike most corporate PACs, Google NetPAC will have an advisory board of rank-and-file Googlers who will make sure the company doesn’t go too far in its quest to be a major influence on Capitol Hill. Hopefully those Googlers understand that the needs of the company many times outweigh their typical liberal positions, while at the same time upholding the “Don’t Be Evil” credo.
